5 Different and Must Watch Slice of Life Anime.
Your lie in April
Story Synopsis
Kousei Arima was known as the Human Metronome because of his exceptional musical abilities. He was the brilliant pianist who had won every competition in which he had participated, though one day everything changed and the trauma of his mother's death left him unable to hear his own music. From then on, Arima started living an ordinary high school life with his friend, Tsubaki Sawabe.
Kousei Arima has forgotten all about his past and music, but then one day he encounters a strange violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who was full of energy and had a passion for music. She knows the true potential of Kousei Arima, and it pains her to see him in a state like this. She wanted him to play the piano and come back to music.
Unique Aspect
The thing that sets Your Lies in April apart from other Slice of Life anime is not its beautifully written and in-depth realistic storyline nor its visually stunning animation, but its musical-centric theme. Music is the least explored genre in any format (series, movies or anime), so it's rare to see a musical-centric anime of this quality.
This series is not less than a masterpiece if you consider the art of storytelling. The way it has portrayed topics like loss, grief, trauma, fear, joy, and passion at the same time without losing their depth is truly astounding and Praise worthy.
Overview
It's one of those animes that is impossible to put down once you start watching it. Your lie in April is the pinnacle of storytelling. It's almost unbelievable how writers have managed to write a story this dark in such a light and humorous manner. Everything from the characters to the music, plot, and writing is in harmony. The series is absolutely a bittersweet symphony worth watching.
Fruit Basket
Story Synopsis
Toru Honda, a charming, clumsy, and kind-hearted girl, is the main character of Fruits Basket. With her mother's death, she is now forced to live in a tent on a mountain. As the mountain was owned by the Soma family, her path soon crosses with the prince of the school, Yuki Soma. Toru, with nowhere else to go, settles in with the Soma family, but the Soma family is not like any other normal family. Toru discovers that they were cursed and that anytime they are touched by someone of the opposite gender, they transform into Chinese zodiac. Toru agrees to keep their secret and moves in with them. Toru being toru quickly develops a connection with them and learns about their tragic past.
Unique Aspect
Fruit Basket explores emotions like fear, anxiety, depression, and trauma and portrays them as realistically as possible. The series focuses on multiple characters and their journey to escape a cursed connection, and throughout the series, this journey is covered very beautifully. We get to see the character development of every character as they find their way through life, even after having so much difficulty.
Fruit Basket is one of the very few great animes out there with a female protagonist, and she alone is reason enough for anyone to watch this series; her sheer clumsiness keeps the otherwise dark set-up of the series light and funny. Additionally, the reverse harem scenario keeps you on your toes, and throughout the series, you'll be anticipating who'll end up with Toru, and you might be changing sides between Kyo and Yuki throughout the series.
Overview
This series is an anime gem, even in the creative and innovative anime industry. This series has remained at the top of its genre for about two decades, and every passing year will just add more numbers to its popularity. It's one of those series that gives you everything: comedy, drama, emotions, story, happiness, and sadness. It has the ability to make you laugh and, at the same time, make you cry. It's an unpredictable rollercoaster of emotions from the very beginning to the very end.
I'm not a very big fan of series and movies that promote some sort of idea or try to prove certain thoughts and philosophy; they often tend to ruin the fun of every series or movie because of their terrible implementation in the series, but Fruit Basket is not your everyday story. It has worked on an idea that is related to each of our lives and presented it beautifully and remarkably. Fruit basket is an absolute must watch series, if you are into anime.
Horimiya
Story Synopsis
Horimiya is the love story of two ordinary high schoolers, Hori and Miyamura, both of whom live a double life far different from their high school lives. Hori is a pretty, carefree, and intelligent student in school but a caring and responsible big sister at home who takes care of her little brother because of their parents working all the time. On the other hand, Miyamura is an unattractive, gloomy, and looser type of guy at school, but after school, he is this cool-looking and attractive dude with a lot of piercings and tattoos who is nothing like his school self.
Unique Aspect
Unique thing about Horimiya is that it's almost close to a real portrayal of teenage life; it doesn't have any superficial or supernatural aspects like the other anime on the list. Instead, it revolves around teenage life and its problems and works with emotions like friendship, love, self-acceptance, and fear. Additionally, the series is filled with a lot of comedy and drama, which makes it relatable to all age groups.
Overview
Horimiya is a fun and eventful anime filled with lots of bittersweet and heartwarming moments, with each episode bringing a smile to your face. Even after a totally simple plot, the anime somehow manages to make it distinguishable from other anime. It's a romance anime without any cringy characters or stupid fan service; in other words, it's a perfect rom-com free from barriers.
Kaguya Sama Love is War
Story Synopsis
The premises of the esteemed Shuchiin Academy is a battlefield every day for two particular members of the student council. Kaguya Shinomiya, Vice President of Student Council, a rich, intelligent, and pretty girl known throughout the school for her personality and beauty, and Miyuki Shirogane, President of Student Council, is a hardworking and detrimental student who is also famous around the school for his charm, but comes from a humble background. Now it's a battle between two extremely intelligent and prideful individuals who have feelings for each other but refuse to confess, believing confession will undermine their pride. That's why, instead of being blunt about their feelings, they engage in a battle of wits to make their respective others confess to them.
Unique Aspect
Kaguya Sama Love is War takes a different approach to the genre of romance and slice of life by experimenting. Instead of throwing the main characters at each other and doing everything possible so they'll end up together, Aka Akasaka has done something completely different with the psychological warfare factor, which has made the series interesting, humorous, and different. Other than its unique premise, the series is also packed with great animation and music.
Side characters such as Chika Fujiwara and Yu Ishigami are also strong pillars of Kaguya Sama love is war's popularity; they make the otherwise insanely absurd storyline grounded and relatable and are more funny and likable than the main characters themselves.
Overview
Kaguya Sama Love is War is a very cleverly and excellently written story, whether you talk about the battle of wits between the Miyuki and Shinomiya or their elaborate plans and strategies against each other. Backstories, in particular, are attention-grabbing. Ishigami's backstory in particular is my favorite. The fights between Ishiagami and Fujiwara were a delight throughout the series. This anime brings the whole package of every Rom-Com anime with its own additional magic; laughter is guaranteed when you are watching this series.
Re:Life
Story Synopsis
Twenty-seven-year-old Arata Kaizaki is struggling with the issues of adult life, and the recent incidents at his past job have left him traumatized and have completely broken his spirit. Because of this, he spends most of his time shut-in and works part-time at his convenience to pay his bills. At the convenience store, he met a strange person who offered him a chance to participate in the Re Life program, where he'd be turned into a 17-year-old with the help of a pill and given a second chance to attend high school for one year. Arata Kaizaki, with nothing else left to be done in his life, accepted his offer and enrolled in the Re Life program, where he explores a different side of life, corrects all the mistakes he made in his high school life, and explores the ups and downs of youth for one more time, which completely changes him.
Unique Aspect
Re Life was all about second chances and changes, and the plot of the series never, for a single second, failed to deliver that. It was fun at times, but it was also emotional at times, just like life. All the characters never felt fictional; their flaws, struggles, complexity, regrets, and, most importantly, their insecurities made them more and more real and relatable throughout the series to our audience. It's our dream to relieve our past one more time and correct all the mistakes that we've made, but life is the mistakes I'll make every time.
Overview
Re-Life was an emotional and exciting experience. It was one of the best stories about personal growth and second chances I'd watched. Additionally, I liked how the series was well balanced between the romance and slice-of-life genres. I also liked how deep this series can be at times. Most of the things seem so relatable that, many times, they don't feel like fiction and feel very real. It is so addictive that it is impossible not to finish the whole thing at once. Re Life is by far the most underrated anime series ever.
